Back Uebelmannia gummifera shoot. The mucilage canals run along the base of the ribs, often making giant masses of mucilage. Because of these canals, the ribs are not attached firmly to the rest of the plant. Similar canals occur in the fruits of Eulychnia (but not the shoots) and in Neolloydia.
