Back    Neocardenasia herzogiana. The ovary is on the left, and the tiny white ovules are spilling out. The outermost tissues of the "flower" are stem tissues and are bearing spines and hairs. At the very right there are petals, indicating the beginning of the true flower. The petals are attached to the rim of a tube formed by the stem, and stamens are attached to the inside of the tube. Stamens attached to the right (at the physical top of the flower) are morphologically below those attached to the left (at the physical base of the tube). The ovary and ovules, even though physically at the very bottom of this structure, were initiated last by the flower apical meristem, so morphologically they are at the top.
