Hassan is interested in how new genes arise de novo in bacteria. Specifically, he's investigating how previously non-coding elements transition into being "proto-genes", and what role viruses may have in explaining bacterial gene origin.

Angela is broadly interested in discovering and engineering new antimicrobials. She is also interested in exploring how the study of antimicrobial evolution can inform and guide research. Co-advised by Howard Ochman and Bryan Davies.
