(also called kinnikinnick; Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). The cuticle here is
so thick it hides the shape of the cells below. The cuticle has an outer layer
that is dark pink: that is probably pure cutin, forming the cuticle
proper. Closer to the cell lumen, the cuticle has a whitish hue, that
is probably the cutinized
outer wall of the epidermis cells, a mixture of cell wall material
and cutin. This is a plant of the Pacific Northwest of the United States and
Canada, exposed to very high rainfalls.
