W 9/23 Discuss Writing Assignment 3 –Summary of an Original Research Paper

Using the sample research paper (handed out 9/16), discuss in class:

1. The parts of a research paper    (including the Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion sections)

2. How to analyze the data presented in a research paper (i.e. reading tables and figures)

3. How to summarize a research paper in two sentences.

Be prepared next time to:

1. bring to class a copy of your chosen paper for Writing Assignment 3

2. turn in a 2 sentence summary of that paper and

3. turn in a short analysis of one of the tables or figures from the paper

4. present your two sentence summary and a table or figure from your paper to the class on a transparency

(3 minute time limit !)

(Refer to Chapter 3, as needed, to review the parts of a research paper.)

Bring to Class original research paper (handed out 9/16)

Preliminary Bibliography

(without annotations)

These will be reviewed by the instructor and can be picked up Friday 9/25.

Begin Short Oral Presentations of two sentence summaries and a table or figure using an overhead projector.

(3 minute time limit!)

You should have read your chosen paper for Writing Assignment 3 and done a preliminary analysis by now! Begin drafting your summary of the paper! Writing Assignment 2 – Annotated Bibliography

For Writing Assignment 3:

1. A written two sentence summary of your chosen paper

2. A short written analysis of a figure or table from your chosen paper

3. A transparency of your figure or table
