habit--this individual is fairly small (individuals can grow up to 3 feet tall in this species).  What leaf arrangement is present?  What leaf shape? flowers--are these flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic?  Can you identify the calyx, corolla, androecium and gynoecium within these flowers?

inflorescence--this inflorescence is a whorled raceme (also called a verticillate inflorescence) developing fruits--actually, you can't see the fruits themselves (they are little nutlets) in this picture.  Instead, you see the sepals, which have turned brown with age.  Sepals such as these, which remain around the developing fruits, are referred to as a persistent calyx.

leaf arrangement--the leaves in Salvia, as in all mints, are opposite.  Look at the two young branches in the middle of the image--can you see that they are derived from axillary buds?
