Purpose:
• To foster more interactions and promote collaborations between UT laboratories that have an interest in viruses or the host response to infection
• To learn exciting new developments in the broad field of virology and the host response to viral infection
Format:
• One meeting per month during the academic year
• On a rotating schedule, one member lab of the UT virology club will present a brief research or literature presentation. We anticipate 6-12 member labs, so on average each lab will have to present no more than twice per year.
• Presentations will be capped at 30 minutes. This allows 15 minutes for discussion. Further informal discussion could be carried out over a late lunch (after the meeting).
• The purpose of the presentation is to inspire/educate colleagues that have at least a tangential interest in virology. Ideally, each presentation will begin with a very broad overview of the necessary background. Each talk should clearly state the relevance to the field of virology.
• A website will be maintained for the UT Virology Club. This will provide a presentation schedule, a single paragraph abstract for upcoming presentations, and suggested readings for the latest interesting papers in virology.
• We are working on creating a nominal cash prize (< $100) for the best presentation of the academic year. Tentatively this will be voted on by talk attendees at the end of the academic year The main purpose of this award is to inspire graduate students to give a great talk and perhaps add to their CV.
• With each member’s permission, the website will provide a descriptive list of member labs with links to each lab’s webpage.
