Teaching Kits
Search Genus/Species:

UTEX now offers teaching kits for use in classrooms and for individual science projects. Each kit includes a selection of algae that can be used to explore a variety of scientific questions. UTEX kits do not come with a specific recipe for doing a project. Rather, they represent experimental material that can be used to address questions that may lead to unique or unexpected results. Suggestions for research projects are described for each kit.

Algae for science projects can be obtained from a variety of sources other than UTEX. There are a few other public culture collections that sell algae (see listings accessed at the UTEX web site). Biological supply outlets sell a variety of algae at excellent prices, and also sell supplemental materials for handling and culturing algae. Public culture collections such as UTEX and biological supply houses are especially good sources of algae for comparative studies. Also they are a convenient when it is very important to know the correct name of the alga and when it is essential to get the alga into culture quickly.

Many interesting teaching materials and science projects are possible with one or more kinds of algae collected locally. Bodies of water of all kinds are the most productive places to find and collect a diverse range of algae, but algae also occur in soils and a variety of other habitats that are accessible to light. Collecting and utilizing algae from a local natural source not only avoids the cost of purchasing algae, but also permits the investigator to address questions that might be of local interest.
