Preparation of Living Algal Strains
Aliquots of algal strains that are maintained on agar slants are transferred to the surface of fresh slants in 25 mm diameter glass screw-cap tubes in preparation for shipment. The fresh inocula are grown in a diurnal light cycle for at least 5 days until a macroscopically visible lawn appears.
Approximately 15 ml aliquots of strains that are maintained as liquid cultures are transferred to screw-cap tubes on the day of shipment. Agar and liquid cultures for a customer are packaged within a Styrofoam* box and shipped on the same day they are packaged.
One tube of agar or liquid culture constitutes an order for a single culture of a single strain of living algae. UTEX makes no attempt to quantify the number of organisms or other characteristics of the culture. UTEX only guarantees the identity of the organism as specified in the strain history.
Culture Charges
The standard charge for living algal cultures is $75 per culture. Because the U.S. government provides substantial support for operating the Culture Collection, U.S. governmental agencies and academic institutions within the U.S. are charged a subsidized rate of $30 per culture. When placing an order on-line these institutions should use the discount codes "us/acad" or "us/gov" to gain the subsidized rate.
Bulk Microalgae CulturesUTEX now sells living microalgae in large culture volumes. We will provide 500 ml or 1 liter of select strains that can be grown in liquid medium. Inocula from agar slants or liquid media will be cultured in one of two ways, depending on strain requirement for high culture density: (1) In flasks gently agitated or left undisturbed, (2) in 150 ml test tubes bubbled continuously with 1.5% CO2. A minimum of bacteria will be introduced during bulk culturing, but small numbers of bacteria are likely to be present in bulk cultures even when inoculated from axenic stocks. Not all UTEX strains can be grown in liquid medium and some cannot be cultured to high density. The following strains will not be filled due to slow growth or high contamination: 31, 572, 753, and 2441. We will indicate to the requester whether a bulk culture can be grown to reasonably high density and will provide an estimated shipping date within two weeks of receiving an order for a bulk culture.

- 1 liter: $250
Media is sterile and ready to use. Media may be purchased in the following volumes:
- 4 x 15 ml tubes of liquid culture media
- 4 x 10 ml agar culture media in 25 ml screw-cap tubes
- 1 liter of media (liquid only)
Culture Media Charges
The standard charge for prepared culture media is as follows:
- 4 tubes of prepared culture media, ordered in combination with a living algal strain: $10
- 4 tubes of prepared culture media: $20
- 1 liter of prepared culture media, ordered with or without a living algal strain: $55 (cost includes an extra shipping charge to cover the added weight)
Shipments within the continental U.S. are charged $20 per order for Federal Express Priority Overnight or UPS Next Day Air delivery. Shipments within the continental U.S. by First Class Mail are charged a $10 shipping and handling fee, however due to the time sensitivity of live materials the viability of cultures will not be guaranteed and replacements cannot be offered. International orders are charged a standard rate depending on their destination. The following prices are shipping charges per order:

Ordering Images
Images from the UTEX web site are now available for purchase. High resolution images will be provided on CD-ROM in TIFF or JPEG formats. For more information about the resolution of a specific image please email UTEX.
Cost is $50 for one image or $40 each for more than one image. Special requests for images that are not on the UTEX web site are $70 each. Orders will be shipped by First Class Mail at no further cost or by FedEx for an additional charge of $15 within the U.S. or at actual FedEx shipping rate outside of the U.S. Orders must be received by Wednesday afternoon for shipment the following Monday. Orders may be placed using the order form for algal cultures on this web site or by calling (512) 471-4019.
