Due to a contamination outbreak, many strains of the Cyanobacteria, Extreme Environment collection, and Salt Plains Collection have been temporarily removed from the web site. Until further notice, most strains with prefix LB are currently not available for order, and no rush orders will be accepted. These strains will be made available once free of this contamination. A list of available strains is available for download: LB Strain Availability. Though unavailable for orders, information on most strains is still accessible through this site.

UTEX offers 2-day workshops for those interested in utilizing algae commercially, such as for biofuel production. Workshops are held at the site of UTEX on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas. More information can be found here: Workshops: Managing Microalgal Cultures

UTEX now sells living microalgae in large culture volumes. We will provide 500 ml or 1 liter of select strains that can be grown in liquid medium.  More information can be found here:  Pricing and Preparation of Shipment


About Us
The Culture Collection includes approximately 3,000 different strains of living algae, representing most major algal taxa. The primary function of UTEX is to provide algal cultures at modest cost to a user community. Cultures in the Collection are used for research, teaching, biotechnology development, and various other projects throughout the world. This website contains a listing of the cultures maintained by UTEX, conditions for their long-term growth, information regarding the purchase of cultures, and various other features of UTEX.
