Transverse section of hemlock leaf (Tsuga caroliniana). Pines are
probably the example of conifer that most students are likely to encounter in a
Plant Anatomy Laboratory, but there are many other conifers as well. This leaf
of hemlock is slightly flattened, not round like the needles of many pines, and
there is just a single resin canal, located adjacent to the vascular bundle,
just exterior to the phloem.
